TP-Link Tapo smart plug — weak wi-fi in one room
Why does my TP-Link Tapo smart plug weak Wi-Fi in one room?
The short answer
"Won't connect during setup" because the phone is sitting on the faster 5 GHz band. On the WiFiXpert Compatibility Index the TP-Link Tapo smart plug scores 54/100, and its weakest check is "Works on 5 GHz" — which is exactly where this problem comes from. Won't join a 5 GHz network at all, which is the usual cause of failed setup.
We publish what breaks with each router and mesh system, and the setting that fixes it.

Free fixes, in order
- During setup, turn 5 GHz off on your phone or temporarily switch the phone to the 2.4 GHz network name.
- Stand next to the router while pairing, then move the plug to where you want it.
- If your router has separate band names, use the one ending in 2.4G.
Before you spend anything
- Never for this. It's a setup step, not a hardware fault.
