Arlo Pro camera — weak wi-fi in one room

Why does my Arlo Pro camera weak Wi-Fi in one room?

The short answer

Recordings are late, blurry or missing at the far end of the garden. On the WiFiXpert Compatibility Index the Arlo Pro camera scores 72/100, and its weakest check is "Works on 5 GHz" — which is exactly where this problem comes from. Cameras paired to an Arlo base station don't use your Wi-Fi at all; direct-to-Wi-Fi models are mostly 2.4 GHz.

Free fixes, in order

  • Check the signal bars in the Arlo app at the camera's exact spot before moving anything else.
  • Move the base station or router higher and out of a cupboard.
  • Lower the video quality for the furthest camera — it needs far less signal.
  • Add a mesh box facing the garden instead of a plug-in extender.

Before you spend anything

  • Only after you've tried lower video quality and a better router position. An outdoor-facing mesh box beats a new camera.
