EV chargers and your Wi-Fi
Outside, through a wall, and expected to work overnight.
What this kit needs from a network
2.4 GHz client mounted outside, through at least one external wall.
- Bands
- 2.4 GHz only on most models. It will not see a Wi-Fi name that is 5 GHz only, and setup fails silently if your phone is on the 5 GHz half of a split network.
- How it's found on the network
- Cloud-based; scheduling and cheap-rate charging depend on it staying online.
- Background discovery traffic
- Low.
- Guest networks
- Setup fails.
- Separate IoT network (VLAN)
- Fine on an IoT network.
Setting it up
- • Get the installer to check signal at the charger position before drilling.
- • Many chargers also take a mobile SIM — worth it if the wall is thick.
- • Stand next to your router while you set it up, then move the gadget to where it lives.
- • Put your phone on the 2.4 GHz network name for the setup, or use one name for both bands so the phone can follow.
- • If your router splits bands into two names, turn the 5 GHz one off for five minutes rather than fighting it.
- • Turn mobile data off on your phone during setup — some apps quietly use it and never find the gadget.
Mesh considerations
- • A mesh box in the room nearest the charger, or an outdoor unit in the garage, is the usual fix.
Router requirements
- • 2.4 GHz reaching an outside wall
- • No captive portal or sign-in page
The kit we've checked
- Ohme EV charger 60/100
Sits outside on a wall or in the garage — the furthest, thickest-walled spot in most homes.
Most common complaint: Charger loses Wi-Fi and misses the cheap overnight rate.
- myenergi zappi charger 58/100
Uses a small hub indoors to reach the charger, so problems are usually between hub and charger, not hub and router.
Most common complaint: App shows the charger offline even though it charges the car fine.
