What usually goes wrong
Charger loses Wi-Fi and misses the cheap overnight rate.

Stand at the charger with your phone and check how strong the Wi-Fi is there.

Many chargers can use mobile data as a backup — check that it's switched on.

What it needs from your network
2.4 GHz client mounted outside, through at least one external wall.
- Bands it uses
- 2.4 GHz only on most models. It will not see a Wi-Fi name that is 5 GHz only, and setup fails silently if your phone is on the 5 GHz half of a split network.

- Cloud-based; scheduling and cheap-rate charging depend on it staying online.

Getting it set up
- • Get the installer to check signal at the charger position before drilling.
- • Many chargers also take a mobile SIM — worth it if the wall is thick.
- • Stand next to your router while you set it up, then move the gadget to where it lives.
- • Put your phone on the 2.4 GHz network name for the setup, or use one name for both bands so the phone can follow.
- • If your router splits bands into two names, turn the 5 GHz one off for five minutes rather than fighting it.
- • Turn mobile data off on your phone during setup — some apps quietly use it and never find the gadget.
With mesh Wi-Fi
- • A mesh box in the room nearest the charger, or an outdoor unit in the garage, is the usual fix.
If it simply won't play nicely
- A charger with a mobile SIM — Removes the house Wi-Fi from the equation for a garage or driveway unit.
