How this advice is worked out

We combine four things: how much floor area one Wi-Fi point can realistically hold, how many floors it has to climb, how hard the materials you ticked are for radio to pass through, and the rooms you've told us already fail. Measured speeds, where you give them, override the guesswork.

We deliberately don't publish a fixed signal loss for each wall type. Two brick walls in two different houses behave very differently, and any table claiming otherwise is guessing. What is well established is the ranking: plasterboard and timber are easy, brick is harder, stone, concrete and foil-backed insulation are hardest — and dense buildings need more Wi-Fi points rather than one stronger router.
