  • Guest Wi-Fi keeps devices apart, which breaks smart-home kit
  • Best features are subscription-based

Best for: Anyone who wants Wi-Fi to just work and never wants to open a settings page.

Best house: Ordinary two-storey homes and flats, especially where a cable can be run upstairs.

Watch out: If a gadget refuses to join, there is little to adjust beyond moving it closer.

TP-Link Deco

Strengths

  • Cheaper per unit than most rivals
  • More settings to work with when something misbehaves
  • Wide model range

Weaknesses

  • The separate IoT network is the single most common cause of 'my app can't find it'
  • Some models trim the background chatter speakers rely on
  • Quality varies across the range

Best for: People who want mesh on a budget and don't mind opening the app.

Best house: Terraces, semis and flats where cost matters more than the last 10% of performance.

Watch out: Advice for one Deco model does not always apply to another.
