TP-Link Tapo smart plug + Ubiquiti UniFi

40out of 100

Known to be awkward — worth setting up carefully

Independent WiFiXpert score. No sponsorship, no shopping link, no manufacturer input.

This is one of the pairings people write to us about. Nothing is broken — the Ubiquiti UniFi's defaults and the way a TP-Link Tapo smart plug finds the network simply don't suit each other until you change a setting or two.

Known issues with this pair

  • TP-Link Tapo smart plug relies on constant background "who's here?" messages, and Ubiquiti UniFi filters some of that traffic by default.
  • Do not put TP-Link Tapo smart plug on Ubiquiti UniFi's guest or IoT network — devices there are kept apart on purpose.
  • TP-Link Tapo smart plug can struggle with today's stricter Wi-Fi security settings.

What it looks like when it goes wrong

  • The gadget is online, but the phone app says it can't be found.
  • Set-up finishes, then the app immediately loses the gadget.
  • The gadget says the password is wrong even though it is right.

Do these, in this order

  1. 1

Turn on the multicast / mDNS forwarding option, and make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi name.

  2. 2

Put the gadget on the main Wi-Fi name and forget the guest network on your phone.

  3. 3

Set the network security to the mixed WPA2/WPA3 option rather than WPA3 only.

  4. 4

During setup, turn 5 GHz off on your phone or temporarily switch the phone to the 2.4 GHz network name.

  5. 5

Stand next to the router while pairing, then move the plug to where you want it.

Settings we'd recommend on the Ubiquiti UniFi

  • Switch on the multicast/mDNS forwarding option so speakers and cameras can be found.
  • Keep the gadget and your phone on the same network, and turn off client isolation on that network.

Good to know about this router: Very powerful, but its default settings block the background chatter that a lot of smart-home kit needs. Separate networks (VLANs) are easy to create here and are the most common cause of 'my app can't find it'.

If none of that works

  • If the gadget only ever sits in one spot, a wired connection is always the most reliable answer.
