TP-Link Tapo smart plug + eero mesh system
Known to be awkward — worth setting up carefully
Independent WiFiXpert score. No sponsorship, no shopping link, no manufacturer input.
This is one of the pairings people write to us about. Nothing is broken — the eero mesh system's defaults and the way a TP-Link Tapo smart plug finds the network simply don't suit each other until you change a setting or two.
Known issues with this pair
- • Do not put TP-Link Tapo smart plug on eero mesh system's guest or IoT network — devices there are kept apart on purpose.
- • TP-Link Tapo smart plug can struggle with today's stricter Wi-Fi security settings.
What it looks like when it goes wrong
- Set-up finishes, then the app immediately loses the gadget.
- The gadget says the password is wrong even though it is right.
Do these, in this order
- 1
Put the gadget on the main Wi-Fi name and forget the guest network on your phone.
- 2
Set the network security to the mixed WPA2/WPA3 option rather than WPA3 only.
- 3
During setup, turn 5 GHz off on your phone or temporarily switch the phone to the 2.4 GHz network name.
- 4
Stand next to the router while pairing, then move the plug to where you want it.
Settings we'd recommend on the eero mesh system
- • Keep one Wi-Fi name for the whole house and let eero choose the band.
- • Leave the eero Labs experimental options switched off while you are troubleshooting.
Good to know about this router: Almost everything is hidden in the phone app, so there is very little to get wrong — but also very little to adjust when a device misbehaves. Guest Wi-Fi keeps devices apart, so anything you control from your phone must be on the main network.
If none of that works
- If the gadget only ever sits in one spot, a wired connection is always the most reliable answer.
