Sky Glass / Sky Stream + Ubiquiti UniFi
Known to be awkward — worth setting up carefully
Independent WiFiXpert score. No sponsorship, no shopping link, no manufacturer input.
This is one of the pairings people write to us about. Nothing is broken — the Ubiquiti UniFi's defaults and the way a Sky Glass / Sky Stream finds the network simply don't suit each other until you change a setting or two.
Known issues with this pair
- • Sky Glass / Sky Stream relies on constant background "who's here?" messages, and Ubiquiti UniFi filters some of that traffic by default.
- • Do not put Sky Glass / Sky Stream on Ubiquiti UniFi's guest or IoT network — devices there are kept apart on purpose.
What it looks like when it goes wrong
- The gadget is online, but the phone app says it can't be found.
- Set-up finishes, then the app immediately loses the gadget.
Do these, in this order
- 1
Turn on the multicast / mDNS forwarding option, and make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi name.
- 2
Put the gadget on the main Wi-Fi name and forget the guest network on your phone.
- 3
Run a speed test standing where the TV is, not next to the router.
- 4
Ask Sky for a booster — they'll usually send one when you report the room.
Settings we'd recommend on the Ubiquiti UniFi
- • Switch on the multicast/mDNS forwarding option so speakers and cameras can be found.
- • Keep the gadget and your phone on the same network, and turn off client isolation on that network.
Good to know about this router: Very powerful, but its default settings block the background chatter that a lot of smart-home kit needs. Separate networks (VLANs) are easy to create here and are the most common cause of 'my app can't find it'.
If none of that works
- If the gadget only ever sits in one spot, a wired connection is always the most reliable answer.
