This is one of the pairings people write to us about. Nothing is broken — the Netgear Orbi mesh's defaults and the way a GivEnergy inverter & battery finds the network simply don't suit each other until you change a setting or two.

Known issues with this pair

What it looks like when it goes wrong

  • Works for a while, then goes offline — usually after the gadget has hung on to a far-away box.
  • Set-up finishes, then the app immediately loses the gadget.
  • The gadget says the password is wrong even though it is right.

Do these, in this order

    Move the nearest mesh box closer to the gadget, then unplug the gadget for 30 seconds so it reconnects to it.

    Put the gadget on the main Wi-Fi name and forget the guest network on your phone.

    Set the network security to the mixed WPA2/WPA3 option rather than WPA3 only.

  4. 4

    Stand at the inverter and check the signal on your phone before anything else.

  5. 5

    Ask whether the dongle can be moved on a longer lead to a better spot.

Settings we'd recommend on the Netgear Orbi mesh

  • • If a device won't join, temporarily switch the security setting from WPA3 to WPA2 and try again.
  • • Give the slow band its own name only while setting a stubborn device up, then put it back.

Good to know about this router: Orbi keeps a private radio link between its boxes, which is good for speed but means the satellites must stay in range of the base. The web page settings give you far more control than most mesh systems.

If none of that works

  • Run a network cable to the gadget, or to the mesh box nearest to it. It removes the whole problem rather than working around it.
  • If the gadget only ever sits in one spot, a wired connection is always the most reliable answer.
