This is one of the pairings people write to us about. Nothing is broken — the TP-Link Deco mesh's defaults and the way a Aqara hub and sensors finds the network simply don't suit each other until you change a setting or two.

Known issues with this pair

  • • Aqara hub and sensors is fussy about mesh systems, and TP-Link Deco mesh is a mesh.
  • • Aqara hub and sensors relies on constant background "who's here?" messages, and TP-Link Deco mesh filters some of that traffic by default.
  • • Do not put Aqara hub and sensors on TP-Link Deco mesh's guest or IoT network — devices there are kept apart on purpose.
  • • Aqara hub and sensors can struggle with today's stricter Wi-Fi security settings.

What it looks like when it goes wrong

  • Works for a while, then goes offline — usually after the gadget has hung on to a far-away box.
  • The gadget is online, but the phone app says it can't be found.
  • Set-up finishes, then the app immediately loses the gadget.
  • The gadget says the password is wrong even though it is right.

Do these, in this order

    Move the nearest mesh box closer to the gadget, then unplug the gadget for 30 seconds so it reconnects to it.

    Turn on the multicast / mDNS forwarding option, and make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi name.

    Put the gadget on the main Wi-Fi name and forget the guest network on your phone.

    Set the network security to the mixed WPA2/WPA3 option rather than WPA3 only.

  5. 5

    Keep the same Wi-Fi name and password when changing routers — it saves re-pairing everything.

    Pair the hub with your phone on 2.4 GHz, standing next to the router.

Settings we'd recommend on the TP-Link Deco mesh

  • • Put the gadget and your phone on the main Wi-Fi name, not the IoT or guest network.
  • • In the Deco app, leave 'Smart Connect' on but turn 'Fast Roaming' off if a device keeps dropping.

Good to know about this router: Deco's IoT and guest networks are separate from the main one, and smart-home kit put on them often can't be seen by your phone. Some Deco models trim the background chatter that speakers and printers rely on.

If none of that works

  • Run a network cable to the gadget, or to the mesh box nearest to it. It removes the whole problem rather than working around it.
  • If the gadget only ever sits in one spot, a wired connection is always the most reliable answer.
