Wi-Fi extender or mesh: which one do you actually need?
Extenders are cheap and often disappointing. Mesh costs more and usually works. The difference comes down to how each one talks back to your router.

A plug-in extender is about the price of a takeaway. A mesh set is closer to the price of a weekend away. Shops rarely explain why, so people buy the cheap one, feel let down, and assume Wi-Fi is just like that. It isn't — the two devices solve different problems.
What an extender really does
An extender listens to your router, then repeats what it hears. Because it has to both listen and repeat using the same radio, roughly half the speed disappears in the process. Put it somewhere with a weak signal and it faithfully repeats a weak signal — louder, but no better.
Extenders also usually create a second network name. Your phone clings to the old one as you walk around, so you end up with full bars and nothing loading.
What mesh does differently
A mesh set is two or three units designed as one system. They keep a dedicated link between themselves, share a single network name, and hand your phone over as you move from room to room. You do not have to think about it, which is the entire point.

When an extender is still the right answer
If you have one awkward spot — a garden office, a back bedroom — and the signal halfway there is genuinely strong, an extender placed at that halfway point can be perfectly fine. It is a patch for one dead corner, not a fix for a whole house.
Before you buy anything
Map where the signal actually drops off first. Half the people who buy a mesh set discover the real problem was a router sitting in a cupboard by the front door. Moving it out, up, and into the middle of the house costs nothing.
